Types of Caste / Reservation Certificates in India
India has 4 main categories of reservation-based certificates, each requiring different proofs and issued under different constitutional provisions:
- SC (Scheduled Caste) Certificate: Issued under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950. Requires hereditary proof that family belongs to an SC community listed in the state schedule.
- ST (Scheduled Tribe) Certificate: Issued under the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950. Additionally requires proof of habitual residence in the scheduled area.
- OBC (Other Backward Classes) Certificate: Issued under NCBC (National Commission for Backward Classes) or State Backward Classes lists. Requires Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) proof for Central Govt reservations.
- EWS (Economically Weaker Section) Certificate: Issued for the 10% quota for General Category individuals with annual family income below Rs. 8 Lakhs and no 5-acre agricultural land or 1000 sq ft urban house.
